Avengers may as well be my middle name as over the last 10 years I’ve grown up and loved reading, watching and playing anything Marvel based. The newest location for the worldwide phenomenon that is Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N is right in my back garden at the Excel Centre in London. So when I was invited to a press night there, it was a no brainer I would be attending. Here’s what I made of the event.
As you enter, you are told you are the latest recruits, being trained up to be on call to help Earth’s Mightiest Heroes when needed. If you’ve ever attended a Secret Cinema event, you’ll know that going along with everything greatly improves your experience. The same can be said of this as due to the staff’s expert knowledge, you feel like you’re being trained up by real agents. We were given an in depth talk about each Mark of Iron Man’s armour that, even as a die hard MCU fan, impressed me.
There’s a wealth of information within each room, giving further insight into each hero. While the majority of information on hand is just the plots from their respective films that most fans will already know, it’s still a nice touch and adds depth to each room. What makes each room shine is the interactive material. An Iron Man VAR training exercise, a test of strength game & Mjölnir ready for you to test your worthiness are just some of the highlights of the event.
Alongside all of these experiences are a host of props that will make any fan boy giddy with excitement. All the costumes are on show as you’d expect but it’s the more obscure items that really please the eyes. The heart shaped herb from Black Panther and the dark elves weapons from Thor: The Dark World are just a few moments that make Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N stand out and not just be cheap cash in. Oh, and you can sit on Cap’s Harley Davidson.
If there is perhaps one issue with this event, it’s the price. £25 for one adult seems rather steep when the experience, while still enjoyable, only lasts around 75 minutes. Price aside, fans of Marvel will still have a blast going from room to room and seeing a variety of props and costumes to admire There’s also a final interactive mission to take part in that allows you to become your favourite Avengers that’s a fun and enjoyable end to the event (Thor on this occasion as my girlfriend stole Captain America quicker than I could say excelsior!).
